Inside India’s “Village of Twins,” Where One Family in Five Has Two of Everything

In Kodinhi, Kerala, twins are so common that visitors stop counting. Decades of research still haven’t explained why — and the mystery follows women even after they leave.

Walk through the village of Kodinhi on any given afternoon and you’ll start noticing something odd. A pair of identical schoolgirls in matching uniforms, walking home side by side. Two elderly men, unmistakably brothers, sitting outside the same tea shop they’ve shared their whole lives. A mother pushing a stroller built for two.

It keeps happening. Again. And again.

Kodinhi is a small village in Kerala’s Malappuram district, home to roughly 2,000 families. Among them are somewhere between 400 and 550 sets of twins — a number that has climbed steadily for decades and shows no sign of leveling off. Researchers who have measured the village’s birth records put its twinning rate at somewhere around 42 to 45 per 1,000 live births. India’s national average is a small fraction of that.

Nobody who lives there set out to make history. There’s no shrine built for it, no famous ancestor credited with it — at least, not one that scientists take seriously. And yet geneticists from India and abroad have spent close to two decades trying, and largely failing, to explain why this particular village produces so many twins.

The strangest part isn’t even the number. It’s that the pattern doesn’t stay in Kodinhi. Women born there who marry out, and move away, keep having twins. So do women who marry in.

Rewind and Setup

To understand why Kodinhi stands out, it helps to know how rare twins actually are in India to begin with.

Twin births come in two forms. Identical, or monozygotic, twins occur when a single fertilized egg splits in two — a process that happens at a strikingly constant rate worldwide, regardless of ethnicity, geography, or diet, at around 3 to 4 per 1,000 births. Fraternal, or dizygotic, twins are different. They occur when a woman releases two eggs in a single cycle instead of one, and this rate varies enormously by population, family history, maternal age, and, according to some researchers, environmental and dietary factors. It’s this second category — fraternal twinning — where population-level “hotspots” like Kodinhi become possible.

India, as a whole, sits at the low end of the global range for fraternal twinning, generally cited at somewhere around 4 to 9 per 1,000 births, well below the rates seen in parts of West Africa. That backdrop is what makes Kodinhi so jarring to researchers: a village sitting inside a country with one of the world’s lowest twinning rates, producing twins at a rate that rivals or exceeds the highest documented rates on Earth.

For years, this was simply local knowledge — the kind of thing families in Kodinhi noticed about their own neighbors without thinking much of it. That began to change once outsiders started paying attention, and the village’s quiet, decades-long pattern became a story that traveled far beyond Malappuram district.

The Inciting Event

There wasn’t a single dramatic moment that “discovered” Kodinhi — no forest ranger stumbling onto a hidden phenomenon, no explorer’s chance encounter. Instead, the story built slowly, the way a pattern becomes undeniable only after enough people notice it at once.

Longtime residents describe simply growing up around an unusual number of twins across at least three generations, without initially treating it as remarkable. It was only as the count kept climbing — and as families began comparing notes with neighboring villages, where twin births were far less common — that Kodinhi’s residents started to wonder whether something specific to their village was responsible.

Local physician Dr. Krishnan Sribiju was among the first to formally study the pattern, tracking birth data in the village and confirming what residents had suspected: a twinning rate roughly five to ten times higher than the rest of the country. Once that figure became public, in the 2000s, Kodinhi’s reputation began to spread — first through Indian media, then internationally — turning what had been a matter of local curiosity into a puzzle that geneticists wanted to solve.

The central question was straightforward to ask and, it turned out, extraordinarily difficult to answer: what was different about Kodinhi?

The Investigation

Once researchers turned their attention to Kodinhi, they approached the mystery from every obvious angle — genetics, environment, and culture — and each one led somewhere, but none of them led all the way to an answer.

The environmental theories were the easiest to test and the easiest to rule out. Investigators looked at the village’s water supply, its soil, and its local diet, searching for some chemical or nutritional trigger similar to theories proposed elsewhere in the world — in Igbo-Ora, Nigeria, for instance, researchers have pointed to a chemical compound in a locally consumed yam that may stimulate the ovaries to release more than one egg per cycle. In Kodinhi, no comparable environmental factor has shown a strong, consistent correlation with the twin births. Whatever is driving the phenomenon, it does not appear to be something in the water, quite literally, even though that remains a popular local explanation.

Genetics offered a more promising lead, and also the field where the most serious scientific effort has gone. An international team of researchers, including scientists from India’s Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), collected saliva and hair samples from Kodinhi’s twins in an effort to identify a shared genetic marker. Crucially, the researchers didn’t study Kodinhi in isolation — they ran the same study simultaneously in three other twin-rate “hotspots” around the world: Hung Loc commune in Vietnam, Igbo-Ora in Nigeria, and Cândido Godói in Brazil, comparing DNA across all four populations to see whether a common genetic thread connected them. As of the most recent published updates on the project, researchers involved in the study have said plainly that the phenomenon has not yet received a scientific explanation.

One theory that keeps surfacing, without being definitively confirmed for Kodinhi specifically, is genetic isolation — the idea that a relatively small, tightly interconnected community with a long history of marriage within the same extended kin network could concentrate whatever genetic variants influence fraternal twinning, the same way founder effects have been documented in other small, historically isolated populations elsewhere in the world. It’s a plausible mechanism, consistent with what’s been documented in comparable twin-rate hotspots abroad, but Kodinhi’s own researchers have stopped short of calling it proven.

And then there’s the detail that undercuts nearly every simple explanation on offer: the pattern travels with the women. Families who marry into Kodinhi from elsewhere have reported twin births after settling in the village, and women born in Kodinhi who marry out and move away have continued having twins in their new homes. That detail is part of why researchers increasingly favor an explanation rooted in a concentrated local gene pool over one rooted purely in the local environment — something a woman may carry with her rather than something tied strictly to the physical place.

The Twist

Here is the detail that tends to catch people off guard once they’ve absorbed the basic statistics: Kodinhi is not unique. It isn’t even the world’s most extreme case.

Halfway across the world, in southwestern Nigeria, the town of Igbo-Ora has earned the nickname “Twin Capital of the World,” with studies estimating a twinning rate of roughly 45 to 50 per 1,000 live births — matching or exceeding Kodinhi’s figures. And in a small farming district of Cândido Godói, in southern Brazil, twin births have been recorded at up to 10% of all births in some years — several times higher than the Kodinhi rate.

Cândido Godói’s story carries its own dark folklore. The town was settled by German immigrant families in the early 20th century, and for decades a lurid theory circulated that the region’s twin rate was somehow connected to Josef Mengele, the Nazi physician notorious for conducting inhumane experiments on twins during the Holocaust, who is known to have hidden in South America after the war. That theory has been thoroughly discredited: baptism records from Cândido Godói document unusually high numbers of twins as far back as the 1930s, before Mengele ever set foot in South America, and forensic historical research places him hundreds of miles away from the town during the relevant years. Researchers studying Cândido Godói have instead pointed toward a genetic founder effect tied to the small number of families who settled the area, with more recent research identifying a specific gene variant, in the TP53 gene, at unusually high frequency among the town’s mothers of twins.

Suddenly, Kodinhi looks less like a singular anomaly and more like one entry in a small, scattered global list of communities where a concentrated gene pool appears to be amplifying a naturally occurring, if usually rare, human trait. The twist isn’t that Kodinhi’s mystery has been solved by comparison to these other places — it hasn’t. The twist is that nature appears to have run something like the same experiment more than once, in unconnected corners of the world, and scientists still can’t fully explain any of them.

The Climax

If there’s a single moment of resolution in Kodinhi’s story, it isn’t a scientific one. It’s a cultural one.

Rather than treat their village’s twin phenomenon as a burden, an oddity to be quietly managed, or simply a mystery to wait out, the people of Kodinhi organized around it. In 2008, around 30 pairs of twins and their families came together to form the Twins and Kins Association, known locally as TAKA — the first organization of its kind in India. Led for years by longtime resident P. Bhaskaran, whose own extended family includes twins across multiple generations, TAKA set out to track twin births in the village, advocate for the specific educational and health needs of twins and their families, and give the community a shared identity built around something that had once simply seemed strange.

The association now maintains its own informal records of the village’s twin population — a big part of why estimates of Kodinhi’s twin count have kept rising over the years, from roughly 200 documented pairs a little over a decade ago to reported figures well over 400 today. It also organizes an annual Twin Festival, drawing twins of every age back to the village for a shared celebration, and the event has become one of Kodinhi’s defining public occasions, with families swapping stories about the particular, universal experiences of raising two children who arrived at once.

Where the scientific investigation has repeatedly run into dead ends, the community’s own response has been unambiguous: whatever is causing this, they’ve decided it’s worth celebrating rather than solving.

The Aftermath

Kodinhi’s fame has only grown since researchers first began publishing figures on its twinning rate in the 2000s. The village now draws curious visitors and journalists, and it has occasionally found its way into pop culture and advertising campaigns that lean on its now widely recognized reputation. A blue welcome sign at the village entrance — reading, according to local accounts, something to the effect of “Welcome to God’s Own Twins Village” — has become an informal landmark in its own right.

None of that attention has produced a conclusive scientific answer. What the research has confirmed: Kodinhi’s twinning rate, verified through birth records and multiple independent studies, is genuinely and dramatically higher than India’s national average, and higher than most documented rates worldwide. What remains genuinely unresolved: no study has identified a specific genetic marker, environmental trigger, or dietary factor that fully accounts for it, despite comparative genetic research spanning four countries. And what’s disputed, or at least unproven, is the leading working theory — that a concentrated local gene pool, built up over generations of marriage within a close-knit community, has amplified an already variable human trait. It’s the explanation most researchers currently favor, but it has not been confirmed the way, for instance, Cândido Godói’s TP53 gene variant has been documented.

For now, the village’s own explanation is simpler than anything in a lab report. Ask a resident why Kodinhi has so many twins, and you’re as likely to hear about the blessings of a local deity, or the supposed properties of the village’s water, as you are to hear about founder effects or gene pools. Science hasn’t settled the argument. Kodinhi hasn’t waited for it to.

Conclusion

Kodinhi’s twins are not folklore — the numbers are documented, studied, and, by most measures, extraordinary. What’s missing is the mechanism: the specific answer to why this particular community, inside a country with one of the lowest twinning rates on Earth, keeps producing so many. Geneticists have ruled out the easy explanations and left standing only the harder, more interesting one — that somewhere in Kodinhi’s shared ancestry lies a genetic quirk nobody has yet isolated. Until someone does, the village will keep doing what it’s done for three generations: quietly defying the odds, one more set of twins at a time.
