The Skull in the Museum Basement: How Scientists Cracked a 700-Year-Old Royal Murder

A box of bones sat forgotten among tens of thousands of other specimens for decades. When researchers finally opened it, they didn’t just find a skeleton — they found the answer to a murder nobody had been able to prove.
In 2018, a curator working through the vast anthropology collection of the Hungarian Museum of Natural History pulled a plain wooden box off a shelf. Inside were human bones — old ones, catalogued decades earlier and then, somehow, lost inside the museum’s own archive for years.
Nobody in the room fully grasped what they were holding.
Because upstairs, in a different collection across the city, a skull had been sitting in storage under a different name entirely — separated from this exact skeleton for nearly a century. Neither half had a case file that connected them convincingly. Neither had a confirmed identity. What both halves did have was violence written all over them: deep, unmistakable cut marks, dozens of them, carved into bone that had been young and healthy less than a moment before someone attacked it.
Historians had a name they suspected. They’d suspected it since 1915. But suspicion isn’t proof, and for over a hundred years, nobody could close the gap between a medieval chronicle’s claim and a body in a box.
That gap wouldn’t close until a team of geneticists, anthropologists, and forensic specialists — working across five countries — finally sat down with the bones and asked them directly: who were you, and who did this to you?
Rewind and Setup
To understand why this skeleton mattered so much, you have to go back to a single autumn in the year 1272 — a moment when the kingdom of Hungary very nearly tore itself apart.
Hungary in the 13th century was ruled by the House of Árpád, a dynasty that had held the throne for hundreds of years but was, by this point, running dangerously short on options. In August 1272, King Stephen V died suddenly, leaving the crown to his son, Ladislaus IV — a boy barely into his teens. A child king is an invitation to chaos, and Hungary’s most powerful noble families wasted no time answering it. Rival factions began jockeying for control of the regency, the court, and the kingdom’s future.
Into this dangerous moment stepped a young man named Béla, Duke and Ban of Macsó. He was, on paper, extraordinarily well-connected: grandson of the great King Béla IV through his mother, and — through his father — a descendant of the Rurik dynasty, the Scandinavian-descended line that had produced Grand Dukes of Kiev for centuries. He held a real title with real power, governing the borderlands known as the Banate of Macsó, in territory that today straddles Croatia and Serbia.
With Stephen V gone, Béla was suddenly one of the last credible adult claimants left standing near the royal line — exactly the kind of person a rival faction would want either as an ally, or permanently out of the way.
He chose, or was persuaded to choose, the second-worst option available to a man in his position that autumn: he agreed to attend a council.
The Inciting Event
The meeting was set for the Island of Hares — a quiet, wooded island in the Danube that would later be renamed Margaret Island, after Béla’s own sister, a nun who lived in its Dominican convent. It should have been safe ground. Convents were sanctuaries. Sisters and monks, not soldiers, walked its paths.
According to 13th-century Austrian chronicles, the gathering had been arranged, at least in part, by a rival nobleman: Henrik “Kőszegi” of the powerful Héder family, a man with every reason to see Béla’s influence curtailed — or eliminated — before the new king’s court could stabilize around him.
Béla walked onto that island expecting a negotiation.
He did not walk off it.
Chroniclers writing decades and centuries later recorded only the outline of what happened next: Béla was set upon and killed, his body left in a state described as mutilated beyond recognition. His sister — Saint Margaret, the nun for whom the island is now named — and his niece Erzsébet retrieved what remained of him and had him buried inside the monastery’s own sacristy, the small room where sacred vestments and vessels were kept.
For 643 years, that was where he stayed. Undisturbed. Unidentified by anyone still living.
The main question the story now had to answer: was any of this actually true — or had thirteen centuries of retelling turned a political killing into a much bloodier legend than the facts could support?
The Investigation and Journey
The first real chance to answer that question came in 1915, when archaeologists excavating the ruins of the Dominican monastery on Margaret Island opened three graves inside the old sacristy. In one of them: the skeleton of a young man, badly damaged, buried with a status and location that lined up suspiciously well with the old chronicles.
The bones went to Lajos Bartucz, a bioanthropologist at what is now Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), for study. What he found was disturbing even by the standards of a violent century: 23 separate sword cuts across the skeleton, along with several fatal blows to the skull. Bartucz concluded the young man had been attacked by multiple assailants at once — and, based on the pattern of wounds, had even been struck while he was already down on the ground.
New discovery: this looked exactly like an ambush, not a duel. New question: was this actually Béla — or just some other unlucky victim from the same turbulent era?
Bartucz mentioned the remains publicly in 1936 and published a photograph of the skull in 1938. And then — nothing. No further papers. No further public mentions. As the chaos of the Second World War rolled across Europe, the trail on Béla’s bones went cold. Many historians simply assumed the skeleton had been destroyed or lost for good, one more casualty of a century that swallowed so many archives, collections, and records whole.
New discovery: the evidence had vanished. New question: could anything be recovered at all, three-quarters of a century later?
The answer arrived, unexpectedly, in 2018. The postcranial bones — everything below the skull — turned up inside that wooden box in the Hungarian Museum of Natural History’s Anthropology Collection, misplaced among tens of thousands of other specimens rather than destroyed. The skull itself, it turned out, had never been lost at all. It had simply been kept separately the entire time, curated within ELTE’s own Aurél Török Collection under a different institutional history.
Two halves of the same man, sitting in two different Budapest buildings, for the better part of a century.
New discovery: the body was whole again, at least in principle. New question: could 21st-century science actually prove this really was Béla, given that 1915-era archaeology could only ever offer an educated guess?
That question launched a full-scale international investigation in 2018, led by anthropologist Tamás Hajdu, bringing in geneticists, an archaeologist, an archaeobotanist, stable isotope specialists, radiocarbon experts, and forensic dentists from institutions in Hungary, Austria, Italy, Finland, and the United States — including Harvard’s Department of Genetics.
Their first obstacle was surprisingly basic: dating the bones. Early radiocarbon results came back suggesting the remains were slightly older than the historical timeline allowed — a discrepancy that would have quietly ruled Béla out. But a second round of testing at the Nuclear Research Institute in Debrecen solved the puzzle. The dating had been thrown off by the “reservoir effect” — a known distortion caused when someone eats large amounts of fish or shellfish that themselves fed on ancient carbon sources, subtly aging their bones on paper. Once researchers accounted for a diet heavy in fish, the numbers fell back into line with the 13th century.
New discovery: the science and the history had briefly disagreed — and it was the diet, not the dead man’s era, that was wrong. New question: what else could this skeleton reveal about who this man actually was, day to day?
Researchers turned next to his teeth. Dental calculus — the hardened plaque that builds up over a lifetime — trapped more than a thousand microscopic food particles inside it. Starch grains from wheat and barley showed clear signs of milling, cooking, and baking: this was a man who regularly ate cooked wheat semolina and baked bread, the diet of Central European nobility rather than a peasant or a foreign traveler passing through.
Strontium isotope analysis, which reads chemical signatures locked into bone and teeth to reconstruct where someone actually lived at different points in their life, added geography to the picture. His early childhood signature matched the region around Vukovar and Syrmia — territory that, in the 13th century, formed part of the very Banate of Macsó that the historical Béla ruled. Later in his childhood, the isotope signal shifts, suggesting a move toward the area of modern Budapest.
New discovery: this man’s whole biography — his food, his childhood geography — lined up with Béla’s documented life. New question: geography and diet are circumstantial. Could anything prove, beyond doubt, exactly whose bloodline this was?
The Twist
This is where the investigation stopped circling the evidence and struck it directly — through DNA.
At ELTE’s Institute of Archaeogenomics, researchers Anna Szécsényi-Nagy and Noémi Borbély ran genome-wide analysis on the remains, and the results did something no chronicle, no burial record, and no isotope reading ever could: they placed this exact man inside a specific, traceable royal bloodline.
The twist wasn’t that the science disproved the old story — it’s that it proved far more of it than anyone expected, and in far stranger detail.
The genetic data showed the skeleton belonged to a man who was the great-grandson — a fourth-degree descendant — of King Béla IV, matching the documented family tree with precision. His genome revealed a striking split: nearly half Scandinavian ancestry, a significant Eastern Mediterranean component, and a smaller Central European contribution. That Scandinavian signature confirmed, in his own DNA, the paternal Rurik lineage the chronicles had always claimed — and it didn’t stop at a vague regional match. His Y-chromosome results placed him on the same specific paternal line documented in a 2023 study of a 13th-century Rurikid prince, Dmitry Alexandrovich, a lineage traceable all the way back to Yaroslav the Wise, an 11th-century Grand Prince of Kiev whose descendants scattered across royal houses in Eastern and Northern Europe for generations.
The Eastern Mediterranean ancestry component had its own explanation waiting in the historical record: it almost certainly traced to his maternal grandmother, Maria Laskarina — a member of the Byzantine imperial family and the wife of King Béla IV.
In other words, the skeleton in the wooden box wasn’t just consistent with being Béla of Macsó. Its DNA told the exact same family story that medieval chroniclers had written down roughly 750 years earlier, without either side ever having seen the other’s evidence.
The Climax
With identity now confirmed beyond reasonable scientific doubt, the team turned to the one question every reader — and every historian — had been waiting for: what, precisely, had been done to this man on Margaret Island in November 1272?
The forensic anthropological reconstruction documented 26 separate perimortem injuries — wounds inflicted at or right around the moment of death. Nine struck the skull. Seventeen struck the rest of his body. All of it, the researchers concluded, happened during a single, continuous, violent episode.
The pattern of the wounds let them reconstruct something extraordinary: not just that Béla was murdered, but roughly how. The injuries suggest three attackers, positioned so that one confronted him from the front while the other two struck from either side — a coordinated formation, not a chaotic brawl. Two different weapon types were likely involved, probably a sabre and a longsword. The clean depth of the cuts confirmed something else: Béla wore no armor. He had walked onto that island unprotected, expecting a council, not a killing.
The sequence, as the forensic team reconstructed it, unfolded like this: first, blows to his head and upper body. Then, clear defensive wounds on his arms and hands — the unmistakable marks of a man trying, and failing, to block the strikes raining down on him. Attacks to his sides eventually brought him to the ground. And once he was down, the assault didn’t stop. The final, fatal blows were delivered to his head and face while he could no longer fight back.
The intensity and sheer number of those final wounds told the researchers something the chronicles never could: this wasn’t a clean political execution. It was personal. As the study’s authors put it, the ferocity of the attack pointed to strong emotional motivation — sudden anger, hatred — even though the coordinated nature of the ambush showed real planning had gone into getting Béla alone and unarmed in the first place.
Planned, in other words. But not carried out coldly.
The Aftermath
Béla’s remains were returned to the same sacristy floor where his sister and niece had originally laid him to rest, seven and a half centuries ago, and the mystery that had outlived every direct witness to it was finally closed.
What’s left behind is more than a solved cold case. Béla of Macsó is now only the second confirmed member of the House of Árpád — after King Béla III himself — whose remains have been identified through genetic science, making his skeleton an extraordinarily rare biological record of a dynasty that shaped Central European history for centuries. His genome offers researchers a genuine, physical anchor point for tracing the Rurik line’s spread from Scandinavia and Kiev into the royal houses of medieval Hungary — the kind of connection that used to live only in chronicles and family trees, and now lives in verifiable DNA.
What remains unresolved is smaller, but still real: the chronicles name Henrik Kőszegi as the man behind the ambush, and the forensic evidence about the number of attackers and the coordinated nature of the attack fits that account well — but no independent physical evidence can place any specific individual’s hand on the blade. The identity of Béla’s killers rests, as it always has, on the written word of chroniclers who were not eyewitnesses themselves. Science confirmed the who, the how, and much of the why. It could not, and was never going to, hand history a signed confession.
What it did do was turn a hundred-year-old suspicion into something closer to certainty — and turn a young nobleman, dead and unnamed in a museum box for decades, back into a documented person: a man who ate bread and fish, who grew up near the Danube borderlands his family governed, who carried Scandinavian blood from ancestors who once ruled Kiev, and who, on one violent afternoon in November 1272, tried — and failed — to fight his way out of a trap that history had already set for him seven centuries before science finally caught up to prove it.
